The Broward Sheriff’s Office has determined that a speeding driver with cocaine in his system is at fault for a crash in Pompano Beach last September that killed a 76-year-old man.

The collision happened on the morning of Sept. 17 at the intersection of East Atlantic Boulevard and Northeast 15th Avenue. Investigators say William Windhurst, 76, of Pompano Beach, was driving a 2023 Toyota Camry and was in the left-turn lane preparing to head north on 15th Avenue.

As Windhurst began his turn, a 2022 BMW M4 coupe driven by Angelo Ragonese, 50, of Oakland Park, sped through the intersection and struck the Camry in a T-bone collision, deputies say. The force of the impact pushed the Camry into the side of a nearby Truist Bank building.

Emergency took them, and a a child riding in Ragonese’s car, to Broward Health North. Windhurst’s injuries were critical, and two days later, on Sept. 19, he died in a hospice facility.

Investigators say toxicology reports revealed that Ragonese had cocaine in his system at the time of the crash. Detectives say his excessive speed and impaired state were key factors in the crash.

He was arrested on Monday and hit with a slew of charges, including DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and abusing a child without great bodily harm.

Ragonese remained at the Broward Main Jail on a $175,000 bond as of Thursday afternoon.
