The body of a man police believe may have been a missing swimmer was pulled from the New River in Fort Lauderdale early Saturday morning.

Emergency crews began searching around 2:40 a.m. after receiving a call about someone in distress in the water near 20 W. Las Olas Boulevard. The address matches that of The Wharf, a popular event space.

Witnesses reported seeing a man struggling in the river, and one bystander even jumped in to try to save him but lost sight of the swimmer, said Casey Liening, a spokesperson for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

Fort Lauderdale police, fire rescue and a Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter team conducted an initial search but found no sign of the man.

A short time later, Fort Lauderdale police divers located a body believed to be the missing swimmer.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the individual and have launched an investigation to determine what happened.
