A multivehicle crash in Pompano Beach claimed the lives of two passengers just after midnight on New Year’s Day, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened around 12:50 a.m. in the 500 block of South Federal Highway near Southeast Fifth Court and involved a 2023 Chevrolet Corvette, a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, and a 2016 Nissan Pathfinder, according to BSO traffic homicide detectives.

Investigators say that the Chevrolet Corvette, driven by Alexandros Lalos, was heading south on South Federal Highway when it collided with the Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Paul Edward Emilcar, which was making a left turn onto Southeast Fifth Court. The impact struck the Santa Fe’s rear passenger side, propelling the vehicle into the path of the stationary Nissan Pathfinder driven by John Blandin, according to BSO.

A passenger in the Santa Fe was ejected from the vehicle due to the collision’s force. Meanwhile, the Corvette lost control and crashed into a utility pole, according to BSO.

Emergency responders from Pompano Beach Fire Rescue took a passenger from the Corvette, a passenger from the Santa Fe and the driver of the Nissan Pathfinder to Broward Health North. Both passengers—who were seated in the front passenger seats and were not wearing seat belts—were pronounced dead shortly after arrival, according to BSO.

The identities of the victims and additional details about the drivers are being withheld under Marsy’s Law. Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and did not say if any citations or charges have been filed.
