Video reveals new details on knife-wielding Broward woman fatally shot by officer
Newly released police body camera footage reveals the tense moments that led up to a Lauderhill police officer fatally shooting a knife-wielding woman three times Friday. New details have also been shared on why the officer was there.
Around 12:25 p.m., Lauderhill Police Department received a 911 call, but the caller, 28-year-old Monique Scott, had only left her first name and a location before the line was disconnected. With scant details, officers were sent to the 4000 block of Northwest 16th Street, police said.
The first officer to arrive went to her apartment and knocked on the door — there was no response. As he was leaving, he found her and her car by his patrol vehicle, Lauderhill police said.
He radioed dispatch that Scott was armed with a knife. Moments later, he transmitted that shots had been fired.
A new 20-second body camera video, released by Lauderhill police Saturday, filled in what happened between the two dispatch calls. Scott can be seen slowly walking toward the officer, holding what appears to be a knife.
The officer demands, “Put the knife down, ma’am.”
He repeats the command four times, with his gun pointed, before letting off three shots, at least one hitting Scott in the chest.
She was taken to Broward Health Fort Lauderdale for treatment but later died from her wounds.
“This incident is a profound tragedy, and our hearts go out to everyone affected,” Lauderhill police said in a statement. “The decision to release this footage underscores our dedication to fostering trust and openness with the community we serve.”
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident, and a Lauderhill Internal Affairs investigation was also opened. The officer was placed on administrative leave pending the results.
“We acknowledge the gravity of this event and understand the questions and concerns it raises,” Lauderhill police said. “Our department remains committed to engaging with the community, listening to your voices, and being as forthcoming as possible while respecting the integrity of the investigative process.”
