The uncle of a 6-year-old who accidentally shot and killed himself in late September was placed in cuffs Wednesday as detectives allege the young boy’s death is on his hands, authorities say.

On Sept. 30, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Carika Hall, 25, was supposed to be watching Odaine Hall at his home in Tamarac. Odaine found an unsecured gun and shot himself.

Deputies and Tamarac Fire Rescue arrived to find the boy suffering from a single gunshot wound. He died at the home.

On Wednesday, deputies arrested Carika at his home and is facing one count of culpable negligence and neglect of a child.

“BSO implores gun owners to properly secure their firearms and practice essential gun safety tips,” the sheriff’s office said. “A firearm should always be unloaded and stored in a locked storage container that isn’t easily accessible to minors. Doing so protects children and adults by preventing unintentional shootings and incidents like this one.”
