A major crash on the Florida Turnpike in Broward has left a 94-year-old woman dead and eight others injured, including three children, officials said. The victims are from Louisiana.

Around 2:30 p.m., a passenger van was driving behind a semi-tractor trailer in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near Griffin Road in Davie, the Florida Highway Patrol said. For reasons yet to be determined, the van rear-ended the tractor trailer. The van skid to a stop in the middle of the Turnpike lanes.

A woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Davie Fire Rescue confirmed eight others suffered injuries. An adult was airlifted to Broward Medical Center and the other seven patients were taken by ambulance to Memorial Regional Hospital.

According to NBC 6, the deceased woman was a 94-year-old grandmother celebrating her birthday.

In total, three children and five adults are being treated. The ages of the injured and deceased were released Wednesday:

All southbound lanes were reopened near the Griffin Road exit sometime Tuesday evening.
