One woman dead after car plunges into canal in Cooper City, deputies say
A woman is dead after a car plunged into a canal in Cooper City early Wednesday morning, authorities say.
At about 6 a.m. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies and fire rescue responded to Griffin Road and Southwest 90th Avenue to find a car in a canal. Details of the crash were not immediately available.
One man was able to make it out of the car, but a woman, who deputies say was driving, was later found dead by BSO’s Dive Team.
“It’s a very sad and tragic situation,” said Carey Codd, spokesperson for BSO.
According to Miami Herald news partner CBS Miami, the family of the driver identified her as 23-year-old Caitlyn Herron.
“She had so many plans for the future. She was going to start 2025 off great. She was saving money, she was paying for her own car, being responsible, she was a beautiful person,” Herron’s mother told the station.
BSO traffic homicide unit continues to investigate.
Due to the investigation, the westbound lanes of Griffin Road from Pine Island to the 8800 block of Griffin Road were temporarily shut down. Road have since reopened as of about 11:30 a.m.
