Young cyclist dies, passenger critical after Pompano Beach crash
A young cyclist was killed and his passenger was seriously injured when the two boys unknowingly rode their bike into oncoming traffic and were struck by a car, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
The tragedy happened Tuesday night near Northeast First Avenue and 26th Street. Douglas Sams, 10, was driving the bicycle with Anthony Robinson, 11, riding on the pegs. The boys were trying to cross First Street when they were hit by a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro.
The driver was 24-year-old Herbie Pierre-Paul, brother of New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. Deputies say once Pierre-Paul saw the boys in the road, he attempted to swerve left but wasn’t able to dodge the bicycle. Detectives do not believe excessive speed caused the crash.
The boys were treated by Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and were taken to nearby hospitals with critical injuries. Douglas died at the hospital and Anthony was listed as critical but stable.
