Granddaughter jailed in elderly Broward couple’s murder, cops say. Did she help boyfriend?
The granddaughter of a slain Fort Lauderdale elderly couple was handcuffed Thursday — weeks after her boyfriend was jailed for his role in the double murder earlier this year, police said.
Jalisa Hill, 38, was arrested and charged with two counts of first degree murder. It’s unclear whether she was granted bond or still in jail.
Her boyfriend, 30-year-old Maurice Anthony Newson Jr., has been behind bars since late August on the same charges with the addition of robbery with a firearm.

Claudette, 85, and Major Melvin, 89, were married for nearly six decades, raising 11 children and 28 grandchildren, when they were gunned down in their home March 22.

Police said Hill worked with Newson to kill her grandparents, though her specific role was unclear. Newson allegedly murdered the couple and then stole their red Ford Fusion, selling it weeks later.
Detectives have been closely watching Hill since the beginning of their investigation. Early on, they questioned her, confronting her with paperwork found in her room—including a list of property expenses. She told detectives that she didn’t own a property, but she was “going to be the one in line to receive [her grandparents’] home.”

On April 9, she sat through a polygraph test, which found she was “untruthful on the question of being involved in the death of her grandparents Claudette and Major Melvin.”
In another interview, she “changed her answers on [questions] she was previously asked” and denied being next to inherit the house, according to police.
