Flanagan High student killed in morning crash while crossing street in Pembroke Pines: reports
Just 20 minutes before Broward high schools started serving breakfast Thursday morning, police say a 15-year-old was hit and killed while crossing a street in Pembroke Pines.
Around 6:40 a.m., the young boy was crossing the street in the rain when a car hit him in the 12200 block of Washington Street, Pembroke Pines police said.
He was taken to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
A preliminary investigation revealed the boy was not using a crosswalk, according to police. Detectives also believe the poor weather conditions and low visibility played a part in the crash.
The investigation is still ongoing.
Flanagan High School Principal Brad Fatout told parents in a message that the boy was near a school bus stop when the crash occurred.
“I want to offer my deepest condolences to the student’s family and loved ones, teachers, and classmates as we mourn this great loss. I ask our school community to rally around the family in prayer and support during this time of deep sorrow,” he said. “To assist our students and staff in coping with this tremendous loss, grief counselors were on campus today and will remain on campus for as long as necessary.”
