‘He was loved by so many’: 16-year-old gunned down in Broward shooting, deputies say
A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed Monday night in Lauderdale Lakes, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to reports of a shooting at the 4000 block of Northwest 30th Terrace around 8:30 p.m. when they found him and a 15-year-old boy with gunshot wounds, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said.
Paramedics took the teens to Broward Health Medical Center, where the 16-year-old died, Grossman added. The 15-year-old is expected to survive.
Neighbor Ihsana Sanders tended to one of the teens shortly after the shooting, he told Miami Herald News Partner CBS News 4.
“I heard a good 5 to 6 shots and I ran outside to try to assist that person and make sure he was still breathing,” he told the station. “[The teen] injured in the leg and shot 3 times in the stomach and had one shot in the side of his face where his mouth was. He had a gun with him and he was wearing a ski mask.”
A witness told the station he watched the shooting unfold.
“Immediately, I ducked behind an SUV, and I called 911 immediately,” he said. “The first victim, as soon as he shot him, he shot him in the face. He went down. The second victim, he shot him in the arm and he took off running. After the first victim fell on the floor, he just kept on shooting him even after he fell and after that he chased the second victim down the street.”
Valerie Dean, the aunt of the slain 16-year-old, created a GoFundMe to raise money for funeral expenses. She wrote his mother is “devastated and shocked” by his death.
“Losing a loved one is always difficult but coping with a sudden loss adds a different level to the grieving process,” Dean wrote. “[He] was loved by so many and will be deeply missed. We take comfort in knowing he is with his father in heaven and we will be with him again someday.”
The BSO did not release the names of the victims. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective Lacey Henry at 954-321-4328 or submit a tip through the SaferWatch app. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477), online at browardcrimestoppers.org, or dial **TIPS (8477) from any cellphone in the United States.
