An unidentified man believed to be in his 60s — the victim of a hit-and-run — may have been dead for hours before a driver spotted his body on a dark, heavily trafficked road in Miramar and called 911 early Tuesday, police said.

An approximate time of when the man died is unknown, though investigators believe the crash on U.S. 27 may have happened overnight.

“It appeared that the body had been there for a couple of hours.” Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues said Wednesday.

Around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday, a passerby called 911 after noticing a body on the side of the road near U.S. 27 and Krome Avenue, Rues said.

Officers found the body of a man who they say appears to be older than 60. His injuries and evidence at the scene indicated it was a hit-and-run, Rues said. He had no form of identification on him.

Sonia Torrano, who operates a food truck nearby, told CBS News Miami she saw the man sometime before the crash.

“He was walking inside the street and was not on the shoulder,” she told the TV station. “If you hit somebody you have to stop and wait for police and file a report.”

Rues said the area of the crash is remote and transited by many commercial vehicles, including freight and dump trucks. About a year ago, a similar hit-and-run incident occurred there.

“It was quite unfortunate,” Rues said about the previous hit-and-run. “It is a roadway where there is no sidewalk, and it can be very dark.”
