Broward deputies shoot, kill man during standoff, cops say. SUV riddled with bullets
Details were sparse Thursday morning after Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies say they shot and killed a man during a standoff in Oakland Park following a domestic violence call the day before.
The deadly encounter, preceded by a search for the suspect, happened around 2:47 p.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of East Prospect Road, the agency said in a news release.
After deputies from the Oakland Park District Crime Suppression Team spotted the man inside a parked SUV, the sheriff’s office describes what followed as a “standoff,” and “a confrontation occurred at which time deputies were forced to fire their weapons,” the agency said.
The man, whom authorities did not identify, died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
It was not immediately known how many deputies shot at the man nor how many bullets were fired, but CBS News Miami footage showed an SUV riddled with bullet holes. A witness who was cleaning cars nearby told CBS News Miami’s Larry Seward that he heard about 20 shots.
The sheriff’s office has also not said whether the man was armed nor has it said why the deputies shot him. It has also not given any details about the alleged domestic violence incident.
“That’s part of the ongoing investigation at this point,” BSO spokesman Carey Codd told reporters near the scene.
According to the sheriff’s office, the man was wanted on multiple felony domestic violence charges.
Both the Sheriff’s internal affairs department and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating the shooting. The deputies involved were placed on administrative assignments, as is standard protocol in all incidents when deputies use their weapons, Codd said.
