A car went into a canal at South University Drive and Southgate Boulevard in Tamarac Monday morning, Jan. 8, 2024, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

The man found dead inside a Toyota SUV that was submerged in a Tamarac canal Monday had been reported missing over the weekend, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s office dive team members found the body of 28-year-old Rondell Edwards, from Tamarac, around noon inside a 2003 Toyota Highlander, police said. He was reported missing on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Detectives believe Edwards was driving north on Southgate Boulevard near North University Drive when, for reasons still under investigation, he drove off the road, onto the grass swale and into the canal, where the SUV sank with him inside, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies, paramedics with Tamarac Fire Rescue and Coral Springs Fire Rescue, as well as officers with the Coral Springs Police Department, all responded to the scene, Codd added.

BSO’s traffic homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into Edwards’ death.
