Truck driver dies, another hospitalized in crash on I-95 in Broward County
The driver of a tractor trailer died Friday after his truck was hit from behind by a car, flipped over and crashed into an unoccupied trailer parked at a construction site on I-95 in Fort Lauderdale.
When the truck struck the trailer, it became engulfed in flames, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, which said hours later that the driver still had not been identified.
The accident happened shortly before 6:30 a.m. near exit 23 when the driver of a 2021 Nissan Altima collided with the right back of the truck’s trailer, FHP Lt. India Miranda said. Investigators were still working Friday afternoon to determine what led the 39-year-old Pompano Beach woman driving the Altima to hit the truck, according to the FHP.
The impact caused the truck driver to lose control of his vehicle, which crashed over a concrete barrier before flipping over and entering into the construction site, Miranda said.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Chief Garrett Pingol said the truck driver was declared dead at the scene, and paramedics took another person to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. That person’s condition was not immediately available.
It was not immediately known if the person taken to the hospital was the Nissan driver, who police had not yet named by Friday afternoon.
Northbound traffic was blocked from about exit 25 to the Griffin Road exit, Exit 23 into Friday afternoon.
“This is still an on-going investigation,” Miranda said.
This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
