An employee at a Pembroke Pines GameStop decided to stop a Tuesday night shoplifter by shooting him, police said.

The shoplifter died after being taken to a hospital. The employee, 33-year-old Pines resident Derrick Guerrero, has been arrested on a charge of manslaughter. He posted $25,000 bond and was released Thursday.

As Guerrero left Broward County Jail, WPLG-Channel 10 reporter Roy Ramos caught up to him and asked if he had anything he wanted to say to the victim’s family.

“I’m extremely sorry to the family,” Guerrero said on camera.

Pines police say their investigation indicated that Guerrero saw the man boosting merchandise around 8:15 p.m.l and tried to stop the stealing from the store at 11069 Pines Blvd.

When the man ran for the front door, police say, “Guerrero retrieved a concealed firearm from his waistband and proceeded to fire a single shot,” hitting the man in the torso.

“At no time did the victim threaten Guerrero or display any type of weapon.”

The name of the man killed hasn’t been released.
