Hollywood expands shuttle micro-transit service to the west side. Here’s how it works

Hollywood has expanded its shuttle micro-transit service to portions of the west side with the addition of two electric vehicles, the city announced.

The 4.6 square miles expansion west of Interstate 95 began Sept. 1 and it includes one wheelchair accessible 12-passenger van and one three-passenger sedan.

Operational since early 2019, the Sun Shuttle had already been servicing portions of East Hollywood, downtown and the beach area — providing connectivity to all major hotels, beach attractions, restaurants, parking garages and other public transportation methods like Tri-Rail. In March, the city began a pilot program on the west side to gauge rider demand and it was a success, city spokeswoman Joann Hussey told the Miami Herald.

“The numbers indicated that there was enough ridership to support this program,” she said.

The project’s net costs are approximately $88,000 per month, but are expected to increase to as much as $100,000 per month during peak season — from October to April — as more vehicles are added to keep up with ridership demand, Hussey said. To help offset the costs, the city generates some revenue from advertising placed on the shuttles as well as from ride fares.
