Have you been having trouble finding an affordable place to live in the increasingly expensive South Florida housing market?

The Hollywood Housing Authority, a provider of affordable housing in the South Broward city, announced Tuesday it will soon open wait lists for several rental housing programs — including Section 8 and others targeted to families and the elderly.

Tony Gutierrez, executive director of the housing authority, said they want everyone to know about these subsidies.

“We know that housing is not too affordable and families are struggling,” Gutierrez said.

Here’s what to know:

Section 8 housing

The housing authority will accept applications for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher, a rental subsidy program, for the first 500 families or individuals who call. A participant can choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program, and isn’t limited to subsidized housing.

The following preferences will be given:

People who live or work in Hollywood.

Families who have been participating in for the last 180 days or have graduated from an approved Hollywood Transitional Family Housing Program within the last two years.

How to call to be get on the wait list:

Phone lines are open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 19-20, or until 500 names are on the list.

Housing program for the elderly

The housing authority will accept applications for a public housing rental subsidy program from the first 100 families or individuals 62 or older who call.

The subsidy can be used at Driftwood Terrace, 7300 Davie Road Ext., a 90-unit apartment complex in Hollywood.

Preference will be given to people who live or work in Hollywood.

How to call to be get on the wait list:

Phone lines will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 and until the 100 names are reached.

Housing program for families

The housing authority will accept applications for a public housing program for the first 50 families who call.

The subsidy can be used at Apollo Terrace, 940-980 N. 66th Ter., a 30-unit apartment complex in Hollywood.

Preference will be given to people who live or work in Hollywood.

How to call to be get on the wait list:

Phone lines will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 22 and until 50 names are reached.

Are there income limits?

These rental assistance programs have income limits depending on your family size.

Check out these instructions before calling

To increase your probability of getting on a wait list, the housing authority asks you to follow these instructions:

Don’t call before the specified dates and times.

Only one name per phone call will be accepted.

Walk-Ins won’t be permitted.

Have available the applicant’s name, address, telephone number, Social Security number and date of birth.
