Breaking news: 1 killed and 2 injured in plane crash at North Perry Airport, officials say
A plane crash at North Perry Airport killed one person and injured two others on Friday afternoon, Pembroke Pines fire-rescue officials said.
At around noon, a single-engine Cessna 172 veered off the runway while taking off from the airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The plane is registered to Aeroflyin Corp., a Pembroke Pines business.
A pilot and two passengers were on board when it crashed, said Scott Gunn, a spokesperson for Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue.
One person died at the scene and two others had to be removed from the plane. The pair were critically injured and taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, he said.
The crash didn’t affect nearby homes businesses or roadways, Pembroke Pines police said. TV footage shows the small plane’s wreckage on a grassy area of the airport.
A small fuel leak was contained by firefighters, Gunn said.
As fire-rescue crews worked the crash, airport operations at North Perry were temporarily halted, said Arlene Satchell, spokesperson for the Broward County Aviation Department. One runway has since been reopened.
In May, a banner plane crashed at the Broward airport, injuring the pilot. The week before, a banner plane from Perry Airport crashed on the street near a Target shopping center in Hollywood. The pilot died in the fiery crash.
