As the Florida Panthers go for the Stanley Cup, Fort Lauderdale’s mayor makes a bet
As the Florida Panthers and the Vegas Golden Knights face off in the Stanley Cup Finals — two mayors have made a friendly wager.
Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis and Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman made the bet before the first finals game on Saturday.
The wager: If the Panthers take home the Stanley Cup, Goodman would have to suit up in a Panthers jersey and take a walk around downtown Las Vegas.
If the Golden Knights win, Trantalis would have to do the same — in Fort Lauderdale while donning Golden Knights gear.
Goodman agreed to the deal on Twitter and said that Trantalis would “look fabulous in @GoldenKnights colors” while strolling through downtown Fort Lauderdale.
This Panthers squad reached the finals for the first time in 27 years, last appearing in 1996. It would be the first Stanley Cup win for either team.
And this isn’t the first time Goodman has participated in NHL wagers.
In May, the city leader boasted that she couldn’t wait to try on her new cowboy hat — and tagged Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson. The Golden Knights downed the Dallas Stars in the Western conference, on their way to advancing the finals.
Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi posted a photo of him in a Golden Knights jersey during a city council meeting in early May. He said he had lost a bet with Goodman when the Edmonton Oilers failed to beat the Golden Knights during the playoffs.
“That said, to honour my bet with the @mayoroflasvegas, I had to sport a @GoldenKnights jersey to Council today, as much as it pained me.”
The Golden Knights beat the Panthers in Game 1.
Game 2 in the best of seven series is 8 p.m. Monday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
