Mass shooting ruins Memorial Day for thousands enjoying Hollywood Beach. Here’s what we know
Chaos broke out Monday evening after bystanders witnessed two groups having a dispute before spraying a barrage of bullets along the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, tragically ending Memorial Day festivities for thousands in the area and leaving nine people hospitalized.
Here’s a breakdown of what we know so far:
Have police made arrests?
Two 18-year-old men were arrested Monday night on gun charges in connection to the shooting after police say they found firearms in their possession not far from the crime scene.
Three more individuals are being sought by Hollywood police for their alleged “involvement” in the shooting. Surveillance videos and blurry still images were released to the media on Tuesday in hopes of identifying them.
Police have yet to determine who shot the nine victims.
What about the victims?
Four children and six adults ages were shot, according to Hollywood police.
First responders took the victims to Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood. One of the wounded was undergoing surgery on Monday night; the others were already stable. The children’s ages range from 1 to 17 years; the adults’ ages range from 25 to 65, a police spokeswoman told reporters Monday night.
The names of the people injured haven’t been released. On Wednesday, Memorial Healthcare System, which owns the children’s hospital, said in an email that four minors remained hospitalized in stable condition.
No deaths have been reported.
