Traffic alert: Heavily traveled Hollywood crossroads face months of construction work
Drivers who traverse a busy crossroads in Hollywood will feel the pain of construction work the next few months.
Dixie Highway at Johnson street is undergoing improvements that will bring the usual batch of traffic slow-ups: workers, barricades, lane closings. No street shutdowns are planned, but if you use the corridor for your daily commute, you may face slow-ups and lane closings here and there. And business driveways might be harder to find and enter.
Work, which begin the week of May 1, is expected to continue until October.
Dixie, also known as North 21st Avenue, is mostly lined with businesses. Johnson Street leads east to U.S. 1 and west through Hollywood neighborhoods and to Memorial Regional Hospital, just west of Park Road. The hospital, a major medical and trauma center for South Broward, is undergoing some construction of its own. The emergency room is being renovated and check-in and waiting for non-trauma cases are now being handled in a construction trailer just outside the front doors.
About the Hollywood road project
The Broward County road project at Dixie and Johnson at the FEC railway includes:
▪ Milling and resurfacing of the intersection
▪ Upgrading traffic signals to steel mast arms
▪ New signing and pavement marking
▪ ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps, crosswalks and pedestrian signals
“Staff will work closely with residents and businesses in the construction area to minimize impacts caused by lane closures,” the Broward Highway Construction and Engineering Division said in a statement.
