Fort Lauderdale police say they have taken custody of a man who witnesses reported seeing possibly carrying a gun on the balcony of a downtown high-rise Friday morning.

Police had issued a “shelter in place” warning around noon to people living near the building, the Society Las Olas, 301 SW First Ave.

In a statement released on Twitter, police said the warning was for those south of Broward Boulevard between Andrews Avenue to Southwest Third Avenue/Nugent Avenue.

People in that area “should stay inside,” the statement issued at 12:13 p.m. said.

TV video showed a large police presence surrounding the apartment high-rise in the Himmarshee area.

Fort Lauderdale police spokeswoman Casey Liening said officers had been trying to “communicate with the man” since they arrived at the building around 10:30 a.m.

The department announced around 1:30 p.m. that it had the man in custody and all traffic restrictions were lifted.

“We are grateful no one was injured as a result of this incident,” the statement read.
