Services for Pembroke Pines police officer Charles Herring will be Sunday and Monday, including a public funeral service with full honors.

Herring, 54, was on patrol on his motorcycle when a palm frond fell off a tree and hit him on Feb. 9, according to Pembroke Pines police. Herring swerved and crashed in an area near Northwest 184th Avenue, just south of Sheridan Street.

Herring, an Army veteran and father of three children ages 19, 18 and 10, died at a hospital.

Monday’s public full honors funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 20 at Charles F. Dodge City Center, 601 City Center Way in Pembroke Pines.

Herring’s other services will be private and limited to family, friends and Herring’s colleagues. Given the number of people expected, which include members of the Pembroke Pines police and fire departments and city officials, traffic may temporarily be heavy on roads leading to, and surrounding, the venues.

These private services include Sunday’s 5 p.m to 9 p.m. viewing at Fred Hunter’s Funeral Home, 6301 Taft St. in Hollywood.

The 10 a.m. Monday service at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, 1301 SW 136 Ave. in Davie, is also private.

After the church service those in attendance, which will include Herring’s family, friends and colleagues, will travel by car from Davie to Pembroke Pines’ City Center for the funeral service. This pocket of cars will be escorted by a contingent of motorcycle officers, Capt. Adam Feiner said.
