Shooting involving deputies shuts down an area of Pompano Beach near the ocean

A man is in critical condition and a stretch of Pompano Beach near the ocean is shut down after a shooting by deputies, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

BSO said deputies answering a crime-in-progress call in the 600 block of Briny Avenue around 11 p.m. Tuesday came upon an armed man who “physically attacked” one of the deputies and “displayed a firearm.” Both deputies fired at the man, BSO said.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue took the man to a hospital.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, as is standard for shootings by BSO deputies or detectives.

A volleyball court was roped off for the investigation, along with several blocks in the neighborhood, and deputies were searching the sand behind condos, according to reports from the scene.
