4-year-old drowns in pool at Plantation home

A 4-year-old boy drowned Sunday in the backyard pool of a Plantation home.

According to Plantation police, the boy and another child were being watched by their grandmother inside the house when somehow the boy ended up in the pool.

Plantation Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Joel Gordon said rescue crews were told by the family that the grandmother apparently fell asleep while watching the child.

“Somehow he found his way into the backyard and into the pool,” Gordon said.

Toman said when the child's father returned to the home on the 5500 block of Southwest Second Street, he spotted his son in the pool. The father jumped in, pulled the boy out and began CPR before police arrived.

Gordon said the boy was at the bottom of the pool, and it was not clear how long he was underwater.

It is the first time in 15 years that the city has had a child drown, Gordon said.

The 4-year-old was taken to Plantation General Hospital where he died. The incident remains under investigation.
