A tunnel under the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale was reopened Tuesday afternoon hours after it was shut down due to flooding from back-to-back days of stormy weather, according to authorities.

The Henry E. Kinney Tunnel — a main route in and out of downtown Fort Lauderdale and toward Las Olas via U.S. 1 — was closed around 7 a.m., the Florida Department of Transportation said Tuesday afternoon on social media.

FDOT moved in pumps to remove the water, but discovered that one of the tunnel’s permanent pumps was damaged.

The tunnel was reopened around 5 p.m. Tuesday, FDOT spokesman Guillermo Canedo told the Miami Herald.
