A Broward deputy in a marked cruiser struck a man in Pompano Beach early Friday.

A man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a patrol car in Pompano Beach early Friday, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

A deputy struck the pedestrian around 5:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of North Ocean Drive, the sheriff’’s office said. Helicopter video taken by WSVN showed the deputy’s patrol car with a damaged windshield. A boot was under a nearby sewer truck.

The deputy was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The sheriff’s office said its Traffic Homicide unit is investigating. A stretch of the road was closed in both directions for several hours during the investigation.

The preliminary investigation found that the pedestrian, a sanitation truck driver, stopped the truck in the left turn lane in front of a construction site. The pedestrian exited the truck, and a Broward deputy struck him.

The deputy then stopped his car, tried to give aid and reported the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

Also on Friday, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy’s car while crossing Interstate 95, according to WPBF. A stretch of southbound I-95 near Okeechobee Boulevard was closed for the investigation.
