A 40-year-old motorcyclist from Miami was killed early Thursday in a crash on Interstate 95 in Broward County, troopers said.

The crash happened in I-95’s southbound lanes near Pembroke Road shortly before 2 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol. A stretch of the road was closed for hours during the investigation, sending traffic into gridlock as morning rush hour began.

Lanes reopened shortly after 7 a.m.

Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the motorcyclist rear-ended a sedan in the inside center lane of the highway, troopers said. The collision sent the sedan into the express lane, with the motorcycle coming to a stop between the outside and exit ramp lane to Pembroke Road, troopers said.

The man on the motorcycle was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where he died from his injuries, troopers said. The sedan driver, a 36-year-old man from Miami, was not injured.
