Downtown Fort Lauderdale tunnel to close starting Monday. See dates, detours and maps

A critical phase of a $28.4 million construction project aimed at improving a tunnel in downtown Fort Lauderdale will require its full closure starting Monday, July 18.

The Henry E. Kinney Tunnel and a portion of U.S. 1 will be shut down to traffic between Southeast Seventh Street and Broward Boulevard until Friday, July 22. Additionally, Las Olas Boulevard will close between Southeast Fifth Avenue and Southeast Eighth Avenue on Wednesday, July 20, and on Thursday, July 21, if needed, the city announced in a statement.

Vehicles traveling north- and southbound will be routed to Southeast Third Avenue, with alternate routes along Andrews Avenue and Southwest Fourth Avenue.

The Florida Department of Transportation’s Henry E. Kinney Tunnel Improvements and Pedestrian Plaza Project began construction in September of last year. The project’s upgrades include:

Rehabilitating the structural, mechanical, electrical, architectural and life safety components of the tunnel.

Milling and resurfacing State Road 5/U.S. 1 from Rio Vista Boulevard to south of the tunnel.

Installing “Intelligent Transportation Systems” along State Road 5/U.S. 1.

Extending the tunnel top to accommodate a pedestrian plaza that will include new fountains, seating facilities and landscape installation and reconstructing the intersection of Las Olas Boulevard at Southeast Sixth Avenue.

The project is expected to be completed in late 2023.
