One dead after car collides with Brightline train in Broward County, police say
One person is dead after a car and a Brightline train collided Tuesday afternoon in Oakland Park, authorities said.
Around 2:30 p.m., the Broward Sheriff’s Office received a call of a crash between the train and car in the area of North Dixie Highway and Northeast 62nd Street.
Detectives believe the train hit the car and a person was killed at the scene.
BSO recently launched Operation Crossing Guard — a zero tolerance enforcement campaign from Monday through June 17 to crack down on railroad rule violators.
Officers will be at railroad crossings across the county issuing tickets to people who drive around safety arms, stop on tracks or commit other moving violations. Fines range from $115 to $205.
Since the start of the year, there have been more than 13 collisions involving Brightline trains and drivers or pedestrians in South Florida. Most of the crashes were the cause of driver error as they drove around gates or ignored railroad safety messages.

“It is vital for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to obey the traffic laws, pay attention to the roadway and to the railroad signage and remember that it’s always a bad idea to try and beat a train,” BSO said.
