Pedestrian struck and killed by Tri-Rail in Broward hours after system issue was fixed
A person was struck and killed by a Tri-Rail train in Broward County on Wednesday, just hours after the railway fixed a system issue that halted the commuter service.
The crash happened on the CSX railroad tracks just south of Commercial Boulevard in Oakland Park at around 10:10 a.m., according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
In its preliminary investigation, BSO said Thursday that it seemed like the pedestrian purposely stood on the train tracks as the train came toward them.
That person still has not been identified by deputies.
The southbound Tri-Rail train had 104 passengers, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority said in an email to the Miami Herald.
Earlier on Wednesday, a pedestrian was also struck and killed by a Florida East Coast Railway freight train in Pompano Beach.
On Tuesday, the Tri-Rail paused while crews worked to fix a system issue that affected the dispatch and radio communications required to run the trains. At about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, the service announced that the issue was fixed.
