From a table for two under a star-flecked sky, to Banksy-themed street art, to a frozen winter landscape, the inspiration for Florida winter guards’ 2022 shows provided some first-place finishes at the Winter Guard International World Championships over the weekend.

Called the sport of the arts, winter guard is a cross between marching band color guard, dance team and theater using dance, flags, rifles and sabers.

Each winter guard chooses a show theme and music to perform each year, making adjustments through the spring season’s weekend competitions.

Units from high schools, colleges and independent groups bring thousands of performers from across the country — and occasionally the world — for the annual finals in Dayton, Ohio.

Florida has long been a powerhouse, with schools and groups competing in finals and earning top-three finishes.
