A Margate officer shot and killed an 82-year-old man who pointed a gun at cops, police announced Monday morning.

Sunday’s shooting happened at 12:46 p.m. in the 100 block of Rock Island Road and Northwest First Street, according to Margate police.

Police say they went to the area after receiving reports of a person pointing a gun at people. When officers arrived, they found Jose Antonio Suarez of Margate waving a gun around and shooting into the ground, police said in a Monday news release.

The officers told Suarez several times to drop his gun, but he didn’t, police said. Suarez pointed the gun at officers, and one of the officers shot him, according to the news release.

Police say officers gave aid to Suarez until Margate paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead. Video taken by WSVN showed a yellow tarp on the ground, with what appeared to be a Bass Pro Shop cap next to it.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, as is standard whenever a police officer is involved. The officer who shot Suarez has been placed on administrative leave for the investigation, as is policy, Margate police said.

This is the second Margate police officer-involved shooting in a month and in the same area. In February, Margate police said they had to shoot and kill Louisson Pierrot, 38, in his bedroom to save his wife, who officers said he was “actively choking.”
