A pedestrian was hit by a car while attempting to cross Interstate 595 early Wednesday near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, troopers said.
The sedan that struck him was then hit by a garbage truck.
The chain reaction happened in the I-595 westbound lanes just before Exit 10B (I-95 S) right before the morning rush hour was set to begin, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash shut down all lanes in the area for the investigation and cleanup. One left lane is still closed.
The pedestrian was taken to the hospital in critical condition, troopers said.
How did the second crash occur?
FHP Lt. Yanko Reyes said that after hitting the pedestrian, the sedan’s driver stopped to check on him. That’s when the garbage truck crashed into the car.
