Who was driving a Honda Civic that fatally hit a pedestrian? Cops are trying to find out
The driver of a Honda Civic traveling through central Broward at a “high-rate of speed” slammed into a pedestrian last week, causing the person to go “airborne,” the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
The pedestrian, whom police did not identify, did not survive. And the driver took off and later abandoned the car, according to BSO.
Detectives are now asking for the community’s help in finding out who was behind the wheel at the time of the accident.
The incident happened at about 4:45 a.m. Sept. 4 around South State Road 7 and Davie Boulevard in unincorporated central Broward.
BSO said a vehicle was traveling northbound when it hit the pedestrian in the center northbound thru-lane of South State Road 7 and Davie Boulevard.
The pedestrian landed near Southwest 12th Place. The driver of the car never stopped, BSO said.
“The preliminary investigation indicated the crash occurred at or near the crosswalk on the north side of the intersection,” BSO said in a news release. “Vehicle debris on scene also suggested the car involved was a late model Honda Civic which would have sustained front bumper, hood and/or windshield damage.”
The car was soon found abandoned in the 600 block of Long Island Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.
“After careful examination of the vehicle, detectives determined the Honda sustained damage consistent with a high speed collision involving a pedestrian,” BSO said.
The car was “secured and towed,” as detectives continue to look for the driver.
BSO did not say whether it had contacted the car’s owner.
Anyone with information is asked to call BSO Traffic Homicide Detective Michael Wiley at 954-321-4840 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
