Missing baby found dead after rollover crash on Alligator Alley in West Broward
After an hours-long search by several law-enforcement agencies, a 1-year-old boy’s body was found in a canal along Alligator Alley after being ejected from a car in a rollover crash Thursday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The infant was inside a Tampa family’s pickup truck driving eastbound on I-75, near mile marker 28, troopers said in a report. One of the tires in the car blew out, and the vehicle rolled over several times until it landed on its roof, the report said.
According to Local 10 News, a car seat was also found nearby.
The FHP said that along with the infant, there were three other children in the car, ages 10, 8 and 4. The driver, a 33-year-old man, had minor injuries, and two women, ages 33 and 56, had serious injuries, the FHP said. Some of the passengers were taken to Broward Health.
BSO Battalion Chief Michael Kane told the Miami Herald that a call came in at about 4:30 p.m. about a crash that appeared to involve a single vehicle, although there were some witnesses.
The six passengers were taken to nearby hospitals with various types of injuries, but Kane said all six were walking and talking at the scene and are expected to make a full recovery.
A dive team, an aviation crew, K9 units and about 50 firefighters helped troopers search for the baby for more than an hour in a canal, according to Kane.
The FHP will continue to investigate the accident.
