His kangaroo jumped around Fort Lauderdale streets. He’ll now have to appear in court

The owner of a since captured kangaroo will soon have his day in court.

Anthony Macias, 24, was charged with allowing the marsupial to escape and having no records of purchasing it, both misdemeanors. He also received a violation for not having permit for the animal, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

As of Tuesday evening, Broward County’s e-case search showed no record of Macias’ recent charges.

The kangaroo jumped into headlines Thursday morning as he gallivanted around Fort Lauderdale near Northeast 13th Street and Second Avenue. Fort Lauderdale police eventually captured the animal before handing him over to FWC.

In an interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Macias called the kangaroo, whom he named “Jack,” a gentle animal that had even befriended his Corgi “Max.”

“He’s so nice,” Macias said of Jack. “He doesn’t mean anyone any harm.”

Macias added that he received Jack about four months ago from a Davie man who no longer wanted him, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Kangaroos are classified as Class III animals, all of which require permits, according to FWC. Fort Lauderdale, however, isn’t zoned for the hopping marsupials, police say.

Since his capture, Jack has been held at a permitted facility as FWC tries to find him a permanent home.
