Broward Sheriff’s Office second in command test positive for coronavirus
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office second ranking authority has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, joining more than 270 other sheriff’s office employees who’ve tested positive.
On Wednesday, BSO Spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said Broward Undersheriff Nichole Anderson has tested positive for the virus. Anderson is recovering from home and still working.
“She is a very private person, but she didn’t want media reporting inaccurate information,” Coleman-Wright said. “We are certainly grateful that she is doing well. When I spoke with her over the phone, she sounded great, and she says she feels fine..”
Sheriff Gregory Tony has not yet been tested for the virus, but Coleman-Wright says he is feeling fine.
Anderson was promoted to undersheriff in September and was the first African-American woman to serve as BSO’s second in command. She has been with BSO for about 23 years.
To date, 281 of BSO’s 5,688 employees have tested positive for the virus, about 5% of all personnel. Of those affected, 107 have recovered and 174 are active cases, Coleman-Wright said.
Two employees, Deputy Shannon Bennett and 911 Dispatcher Nikima Thompson, have died from the virus.
