BSO mourns the death of another deputy, the third sheriff’s worker to die in two months
The Broward Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of another deputy, who was killed in a motorcycle crash Tuesday night.
At 9:44 p.m., Deputy Roberto Aspuru, 54, was in a single-vehicle crash involving his personal motorcycle near 1799 South Federal Highway in Boca Raton, police said. Police are still investigating how the crash occurred.
The sheriff’s office said Aspuru was taken to Delray Medical Center, where he later died.
Aspuru was nearing his 21st year at the sheriff’s office. He began working with the Department of Detention in 1999 and moved to law enforcement in 2001. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps before joining BSO.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of another member of our BSO family,” the sheriff’s office said. “Join us in keeping his family, friends, and BSO family in your thoughts and prayers.”
On April 3, BSO also mourned the passing of Deputy Shannon Bennett, 39, who died of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. He served with the sheriff’s office for 12 years and was a member of the LGBTQ community.
On May 4, Nikima Thompson also died from COVID-19. She was a 41-year-old mother of three, who served as a 911 dispatcher for BSO. She worked with the sheriff’s office for more than 15 years.
