Woman killed when Brightline train hit her car. She drove around lowered gates, BSO said.
A woman was killed Tuesday when a Brightline train slammed into her car. The driver had driven around the lowered railroad crossing arms and ignored the train’s horn and flashing lights at the crossing, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
The woman, identified Wednesday by BSO as 21-year-old Henrisha Victoria France Donjoe, was killed on impact.
She had to be extricated from the mangled white sedan, according to the Sun Sentinel.
The accident happened at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Northwest Sixth Street and Dixie Highway in Pompano Beach.
According to BSO, the Brightline train was heading southbound and Donjoe — in a 2010 Honda — was headed northbound on North Flagler Avenue before making a left turn to head west toward the railroad crossing.
“The vehicle then entered the eastbound lanes and proceeded to drive around the lowered gate arms,” BSO said in a news release. “As the Honda entered the crossing area, it was subsequently struck by the oncoming train.”
Witnesses told deputies that “the train’s loud horn was blaring, all four crossing gate arms were lowered, warning lights were flashing and the audible warning bell was ringing,” BSO said.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
