A rider in a deadly motorcycle crash had rolled up $4,000 in traffic fines

A Plantation rider in a Sunday’s double fatal motorcycle crash on Hallandale Beach Boulevard had a driving record filled with $4,000.60 in traffic fines since 2008, an online check of his driving record revealed.

Michael McKenzie, 32, died owing Broward County $2,397.60 in traffic fines for violations that included going 81 mph in a 45 mph zone on a Kawasaki in 2016 and repeatedly driving with his license suspended. McKenzie owed $441.45 on his last ticket, running a red light in a car in 2016. He fully paid some Broward tickets and his two Miami-Dade tickets for driving without a license.

In Miami-Dade, McKenzie paid $741 on two tickets for driving on a suspended license.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, at around 2:05 a.m. Sunday, McKenzie, on his Kawasaki ZX1400, T-boned Oscar Boatwright as Boatwright made a U-turn on Hallandale Beach Boulevard on his Harley-Davidson. Both men were wearing helmets, BSO said, but both were thrown from their motorcycles at Southwest 40th Avenue.

McKenzie, 32, and Belle Glade’s Boatwright, 35, were died on the street.

Palm Beach County records say Boatwright was sentenced to probation, community service and an alcohol ban after a reckless driving on a motorcycle conviction in 2011. He also later paid a $139 civil penalty for driving without a seat belt.
