‘Yuh dead today.’ Hollywood man texted victim threat before shooting him, cops say
Najay Jackson texted a man, “Yuh dead today.” A few hours later, police say Jackson put a bullet in the man’s skull.
He told them he thought the victim had placed him under a voodoo curse.
Just before 7 a.m. Wednesday, Jackson, 19, texted the man the threat. Two hours later riding around on a red mountain bike, Jackson cruised around the 8900 block of Southwest 19th Street in Miramar, police said. He texted the man again, “Sliding to u.”
Twenty minutes later, Jackson sent another message, “Slide to the gate.”
This time the man answered. “Ight,” he texted back.
Police were soon called out to reports of gunfire. Officers found Jackson’s target dead on the yard with gunshot wounds to the head, police said.
Sea Castle Elementary, Somerset Central and La Petit Academy were placed in lockdown because of the shooting.
A person who lived in the neighborhood told officers they heard several gunshots and saw Jackson walk casually to a bike, tucking an object in his front waistband before riding away.
When officers got a hold on surveillance video, it showed Jackson riding in and stopping near the victim, waving his arm at him to get his attention. The victim walks up to Jackson and they walk down the street, police said.
Hollywood police later stopped Jackson and arrested him. Police say Jackson made a statement, but what was said was redacted on his arrest report.
“Detectives believe that the suspect killed the victim because he thought the victim had placed a voodoo curse on him,” said Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues.
Jackson was charged with premeditated murder and remains in a Broward jail. He was refused a bond.
