A broken sewage pipe near a Pompano Beach Walgreens has affected nearby canals, according to city officials.

The incident occurred Friday near 960 S. Powerline Road. Sewage has since leaked into the Cypress Bend Lakes and C14 Canals.

It’s unclear what caused the break.

City officials have advised people to avoid swimming, fishing or irrigating from the canals as they work to repair the pipe. The city’s water was deemed safe to drink, bathe and cook.

Residents with questions should call the city’s customer service line at 954-786-4637.
