Another day, another water main or sewage main break in Fort Lauderdale
THURSDAY MORNING UPDATE: The water main was repaired late Wednesday. The precautionary boil water notice (see below) remains in effect. There will be lane closures Thursday on Northeast Fourth Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.
Another pipe was struck Wednesday afternoon in Fort Lauderdale, where the breaking of water mains and sewer mains have been as common as water over the last several months.
Wednesday’s problem, according to the city, was in the area of Northeast Fourth Street and Seventh Avenue in the Victoria Park area. Unlike December’s sewer main bursts, some of which were also in the Victoria Park area, this was caused by a contractor striking a 12-inch pipe and was a water main. It involves no sewage.
As of 6:30 p.m., crews were shutting off valves controlling the water flow to the broken pipe. The city said this will cause low pressure or no pressure as far as water in buildings on Northeast Fourth Street from Northeast Eighth Avenue to Federal Highway.
Once work begins, Northeast Fourth Street from Eighth Avenue to Federal Highway will be closed except to local traffic.
A precautionary boil-water notice was issued late Wednesday for an area bound by Northeast Second Street on the north, Northeast Fifth Street on the south, Northeast Seventh Avenue on the west, and Northeast Ninth Avenue on the east.
The city said this isn’t related to the replacement of a 16-inch sewer main in Victoria Park.
