The latest on roads, water quality after two more Fort Lauderdale sewer line breaks
Here’s the Tuesday noon update from the city of Fort Lauderdale after two more sewer main breaks Monday evening brought the December total to six.
The city announced Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis will speak on the city’s infrastructure Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. at Fort Lauderdale City Hall Commission Chambers, 100 N. Andrews Ave.
The latest breaks
Monday evening, there was a 12-inch sewer main break on Northeast 36th Street east of Bayview Drive in Coral Ridge Country Club Estates and a 16-inch sewer main break on Northeast Fifth Street near Northeast 16th Avenue in Victoria Park.
If the latter break sounds familiar, it’s the same pipe that broke Friday. This break is east of that one. This city says this line should be back in service today.
As for the former break, work has begun on replacing the pipe and getting the road back open.
Road closures
In Victoria Park, Northeast Fifth Street is closed from Northeast 16th Avenue to Northeast 17th Way.
In Rio Vista, part of Southeast 10th Street and Sourht Rio Vista Boulevard east of Southeast Ninth Avenue; Southeast Ninth Avenue from Southeast Eighth Street to Ponce de Leon Drive.
Also closed...
Virginia Young Park, 1000 SE Ninth Ave., and Hector Park, 1001 Southeast 11th St.
Water quality and activity advisory
The water quality tests from Sunday still show a high concentration of enterococci bacteria. A count above 130 Most Probable Number (MPN) of viable enterococcus cells per 100 milliliters is problematic. In the Himmarshee Canal, Sunday’s measurements at various points was 728, 865 and 305 MPN/100mL.
That’s why doing anything fun — swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, paddle-boarding, etc. — is still discouraged in the Himmarshee Canal from South Federal Highway to the New River.

The city advises residents to stay away from standing water. Wash hands thoroughly with warm water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Also, keep a spray bottle on your porch with 90 percent water, 10 percent bleach for cleaning items that might have touched wastewater.
Activity on the other breaks
The city says “Backfilling work has been completed around the new section of 54-inch pipe that was installed on SE 10 Street along the north side of Virginia Young Park.”
The valve around the 48-inch pipe in the Himmarshee Canal is working.
