Did you get electronics for Christmas? Those boxes could make you a target for robbers, cops say

Did you get that flat screen television or computer that you wanted for Christmas?

If the answer is yes, then the next question is what did you do with the box?

At least two South Florida police departments are warning people to break down boxes and conceal them so as not to “advertise” to criminals what may be inside.

“Always break down your boxes and conceal them in an opaque garbage bag(s) before placing them out for trash,” Pembroke Pines police tweeted.

Miami Beach had a similar message.

“While you may be excited for your new Holiday gifts, the last thing you want to do is leave the packaging on the curb, as that advertises what you got to potential thieves,” the department said.

Leading up to the holidays, police department offered other tips to avoid becoming a target for thieves. This also goes for when you have items to return to stores after the holidays.

One, according to Miami-Dade police, is to not leave gifts in a car (or anywhere for that matter) in plain sight.

“Place all packages in the locked trunk of your vehicle,” Miami-Dade police Sgt. Erin Alfonso said in a video. “Avoid leaving them in the vehicle for long periods of time.”
