A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot his mother with his father’s gun Thursday afternoon, Fort Lauderdale police say.

Early Friday evening, police said she was in stable condition.

What happened could’ve been worse — the 3-year-old boy’s 1-year-old sister was in the car also as it sat parked at 2510 W. Broward Blvd., a retail building with a Krispy Kreme donut shop, Wells Fargo bank, T-Mobile phone store and GNC Nutrition Center.

Around 1:45 p.m., police said, the father put his legally-owned handgun under his seat before going into a business. The boy got out of his car seat, and got the gun from under the seat. The gun fired.
