Stretch of I-75 shut down after head-on collision kills wrong-way driver
Westbound lanes on Interstate 75 early Tuesday remained closed in Broward from U.S. 27 west to the eastern toll plaza after a wrong-way crash that killed a 23-year-old Pembroke Pines woman.
A Florida Highway Patrol crash report says Flavio Pinto drove her Honda Civic east in the westbound lanes (I-75 North) when she collided head-on just before midnight with a Nissan Frontier pickup truck with driver Jose Carabeo and passenger Cindy Carabeo of Valrico. Pinto’s Civic was tossed into the path of Reynier Diaz’s Toyota.
Pinto died in her car. The Carabeos were injured. The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
I-75 to Naples remains shut down for a 25-mile stretch from the crash site near U.S. 27 to the east Alligator Alley toll plaza.
The list of Pinto’s driving convictions in South Florida starts and ends with a July speeding ticket for going 56 mph in a 40 mph zone in Plantation on which she owed a $200 fine.
This report will be updated as more information becomes available
