A crash between a box truck and a car in Fort Lauderdale sent two people to the hospital Tuesday morning, one in critical condition and another in serious condition.

The accident happened early Tuesday morning on the northbound lanes of Interstate-95 at Davie Boulevard. The impact sent both vehicles careening off the side of the highway into trees and bushes.

When Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue crews arrived, they found two “heavily damaged, barely identifiable vehicles twisted together in the grass on the east side of the interstate,” Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Heiser said.

The driver of the car was attempting to climb out of the mangled mess when crews arrived. The driver of the box truck had to be freed from the compartment of the truck with the “jaws of life.” Both of the injured were taken to Broward Health Medical Center. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
